This photo was taken near Davis, California in late August, just before the Swainson's Hawks begin their migration to the Patagonia in Argentina. Swainson's hawks have long pointed wings that distinguish them from other buteos. Also, not the large dark trailing edge of the wings. Swainson's Hawks eat grasshoppers and other insects as well as small vertebrates. Swainson's Hawks take small insects in the air and feed while flying. Swainson's hawks can be distinguished in the air by the large dark trailing edge of the wing. By contrast, a red-tailed hawk has a dark patagial mark and is lighter on the rest of the wing.
