Cooper's Hawk in Flight

Sharp-shinned Hawk in Flight
|
The Cooper's Hawk has a longer tail. The Sharp-shinned Hawk's tail appears
squared off while the Cooper's Hawk's tail is deeply curved.
This photo shows the size difference between the Accipiters that are commonly
seen during the fall migration at Hawk Hill,
in the Marin Headlands of Northern California. The male Sharp-shinned
Hawk is much smaller than this female Cooper's Hawk. A female Sharp-shinned
Hawk is almost the same size as the male Cooper's Hawk.
You can also see that a Cooper's Hawk will raise its hackles while the
Sharp-shinned Hawk's head feathers remain down.
