One hundred and ten GGRO volunteer banders worked from August 16th through December 21st to band 873 raptors. This was the lowest total banded for a year since 1991 when we banded 810 raptors. We banded more Sharp-shinned Hawks in 1998 than we had in the previous two years -- at 356, only slightly below the six-year average for Sharpies - but Cooper's Hawks were the lowest since 1991.

We banded no Northern Harriers for the first time, and we banded the fewest Red-tailed Hawks in our history. (In 1984 when we ran only one banding blind with untrained volunteers and unreliable equipment we still managed to trap and band 156 Redtails.) The 22 American Kestrels banded in 1998 were about half our six-year average for that species. The September peak-banding days came about a week early, and the anticipated second Redtail peak, usually seen around the first week in November, was not discernible in banding totals.
